Dental filling

After a new tooth filling is made, the tooth may be sensitive to thermal stimuli (even for 14 days) and may be sensitive to bite. This sensitivity should subside after a few days.

Photocomposite (white) fillings can be loaded immediately after fabrication.

Amalgam fillings may be more susceptible to thermal changes. Amalgam fillings should not be loaded for 2 to 3 hours after fabrication, i.e. do not bite for 2 to 3 hours.

If pain and sensitivity increases, especially at night, contact your dentist.

Tooth extraction (pulling)

Tooth extraction is performed under local anaesthesia (numbness). This is most often a minor surgical procedure. Various serious complications can occur in the post-extraction period. The occurrence of these complications can be prevented by following the principles below:

Leave the bite swab in the mouth for about 15 minutes after tooth extraction. This swab compresses the extraction wound, thus preventing bleeding. In case of slight bleeding even after the swab is removed, bite down on a clean tissue. Leave the bite for another 15 minutes. This will again prevent bleeding from the wound. Discoloured saliva may occur for up to 2 days after the procedure. If bleeding continues to a greater extent, contact your doctor.

Pain and swelling around the extraction wound may be another side effect of the extraction. You can eliminate the pain with a conventional painkiller (Ibuprofen, Panadol ...). You can reduce the swelling by carefully icing the affected area. The swelling should subside by the second day after the procedure. If the swelling increases and the pain becomes twitching, contact your treating physician.

Do not rinse the extraction wound or gargle any preparations in the mouth. Doing so could disrupt the blood coagulum (plug). This is important for complete wound healing. Two days after the procedure, you can start rinsing your mouth with mouthwash (preferably Corsodyl, Chamomile, Sage). In case of complications, contact your doctor.

Fatigue and increased temperature may be a natural occurrence. If the temperature is above 38.0 C, contact the attending physician.

Do not consume hot food and drinks on the same day. Keep smoking to a minimum, preferably no smoking for two days. Limit sports and strenuous physical work...

Maintain thorough oral hygiene. Clean the extraction wound with the greatest care.

Endodontic treatment of the tooth

After filling the root system of a tooth, pressure pain and tenderness may occur in the area of the tooth being treated. Most often these problems subside within one week. Bite sensitivity may persist for several weeks after treatment. You can reduce the sensitivity by taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

In rare cases, swelling and more severe pain may occur. If these complications occur, contact your treating physician.

The tooth is weakened after endodontic treatment. Do not put too much pressure on the tooth until the filled tooth is finally fitted with prosthetic work (crown, onlay, filling). Avoid toast, nuts, etc. A tooth without prosthetic treatment could crack.

Handing in the denture

Using a removable denture may be a minor inconvenience at first. Getting used to the new denture may take a few days to weeks. The mucosa under the removable denture may react with slight redness and pain, this is a natural reaction. If the pain increases, as does the redness or swelling, contact your doctor. The removable denture can be easily adjusted.

Wear the prosthesis overnight until you get used to the new prosthesis. However, always clean the denture thoroughly with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Clean the denture once a day. It is advisable to rinse the denture with water after each meal and put it back in your mouth.

Later, you can leave the denture in water or a disinfectant solution (e.g. Corega) overnight.

Difficulties with pronunciation may occur, but these will correct themselves after a while. The biting mechanism is different from the dentition itself. Avoid stiff and sticky food. Temperature perception is limited in total dentures, so be careful with hot drinks and food. In the beginning, choose a rather mushy diet, cutting food into smaller pieces. In time, you will get the necessary practice
